Research Methods

This course is a hands-on introduction to three of the main qualitative research methods used by sociocultural anthropologists and sociologists: participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and qualitative surveys. Over the course of the semester, students work individually and collaboratively on a research project, practicing these methods and doing complementary library research. We accompany this methodological training with critical reflections about the ethics and politics of research, and we read and discuss ethnographic texts. Students’ semester-long research culminates in writing a short ethnographic text intended for a broad audience.
